Chief’s Statement Regarding Loss of Retired Trooper Robert LaMay

Olympia, WA – Upon hearing the news of the loss of retired Trooper Robert LaMay, Washington State Patrol Chief John R. Batiste released this statement:

“I am deeply saddened over the news that our former friend and colleague Trooper Robert LaMay has passed away. This agency’s prayers and remembrances are with his family and loved ones. Rob served honorably for over two decades and we were disappointed to see him leave the agency this past October. His service to this state and agency will be long remembered and appreciated.

Let us now remember our old friend, support his family and loved ones, give thanks for his service, and resolve to meet the challenges ahead with continuing duty, dignity and respect.”

Trooper LaMay’s Bio:

Trooper Robert D. LaMay II was born in Upland, California, on June 24, 1971. He graduated from Keller High School in Keller, Texas. He attended The Ocean Corporation, graduating in March of 1994 with a certificate in underwater welding.

  • Rob LaMay began his career with the Washington State Patrol on May 17, 1999, as a Trooper Cadet assigned to the Collision Records Section.
  • On July 2, 2001, he graduated and was commissioned with the 86th Trooper Basic Training Class, assigned to Shelton.
  • On October 17, 2002, Trooper LaMay transferred to Poulsbo.
  • On September 7, 2004, he transferred to Bremerton.
  • On February 6, 2006, he transferred to the Commercial Vehicle Division, assigned to Union Gap.
  • He was voted the 2007 Commercial Vehicle Division District Trooper of the year for District 3.
  • On December 16, 2012, he came back to the Field Operations Bureau, assigned to Ellensburg.
  • On September 16, 2014, he transferred to Yakima.

Trooper LaMay held several different specialty positions within the State Patrol throughout his tenure to include Armorer, Certified Reconstructionist, and Drug Recognition Expert.

Trooper LaMay retired from the Washington State Patrol on October 19, 2021, after serving over 22 years with the State Patrol and the citizens of Washington State.
