What is the current seat belt law and when are they required?An officer who observes an individual driving a motor vehicle and not wearing their seat belt can stop the individual and take enforcement. What preparations should I make when I plan to camp and hike in Eastern Washington?The climate in areas of Washington State east of the Cascade Mountains is much drier than in the Puget Sound area. The dry, sunny climate makes our area a popular holiday and weekend destination for residents of Western Washington. When visiting our dry climate, please read and comply with campsite rules and exercise caution while camping and hiking so that everyone can continue to enjoy the recreational opportunities that our climate provides. Always keep in mind that one careless spark can start a forest or grass fire. Can I tow another vehicle behind my travel trailer?No, according to RCW 46.44.036, it is unlawful for any person to operate upon the public highways of this state any combination of vehicles consisting of more than two vehicles. Back to TopCan I ride in a camper trailer?No. According to RCW 46.61.625, no person or persons shall occupy any trailer while it is being moved upon a public highway, except a person occupying a proper position for steering a trailer designed to be steered from a rear-end position. What precautions should I take when I camp and hike?Eastern Washington’s dry climate and rock-strewn slopes create an ideal habitat for rattlesnakes as well as nonpoisonous bull snakes, the natural enemy of rattlers. Snakes usually avoid people and are not aggressive unless they feel threatened. Campers and hikers should exercise care and be aware of their surroundings. Rattlers give a distinctive warning when humans trespass into their territory. If a rattlesnake is encountered, remain calm and motionless to reduce the perceived threat and give the snake an opportunity to escape. If a medical emergency occurs, call 9-1-1 on your cellular telephone. Be prepared to tell the 9-1-1 Operator your exact location (as clearly as you can describe it). Which exit from SR-2/97 do I take to get to Lake Chelan?From Stevens or Blewett passes, go east on SR-2/97 to the northern outskirts of Wenatchee. Take the Chelan/Okanogan off-ramp that curves through an underpass and approaches a traffic light at Easy Street. Approximately a quarter mile past the traffic light, take the second exit to the right (prior to crossing the Columbia River). At the bottom of the cloverleaf (Euclid Avenue), go north. Euclid becomes SR-97A after you leave the overpass area. Chelan is approximately 30 miles north of Wenatchee. If you are traveling west on SR-2/97, take the first off-ramp after crossing the Columbia River. Turn right on Euclid Avenue and proceed north on Euclid Avenue (SR-97A). SR-97A is a two-lane highway along the western shoreline of the Columbia River. Deer and Bighorn sheep frequent the basalt cliffs along the river, sometime encroaching on the highway and creating a traffic hazard. A limited number of wildlife viewing areas are provided. Motorists are encouraged to be vigilant while traveling Highway 97A. See our District Resource Links for maps and other travel resources. What is the best route to Grand Coulee Dam from I-90?When approaching Moses Lake from the east, take SR-17 north past Soap Lake to SR-2. At Coulee City, go north on SR-155 to its intersection with SR-174 at Electric City and Grand Coulee. When traveling east from Vantage, go north on SR-283 at George to SR-28. Continue on SR-28 through Ephrata to the intersection with SR-17 at Soap Lake. Continue past Soap Lake to SR-2. (See additional directions above.)
