I just moved into the state. Does my car have to be inspected before I can register it? Where can I have it done?

The State Patrol does not conduct vehicle safety inspections. We do, however, inspect every vehicle that comes from out of state, every insurance total, and every rebuilt vehicle for vehicle identification numbers (VIN). In addition, home-made trailers and "kit" cars must have a State Patrol inspection prior to licensing.

In King County, there are two inspection stations:in operation and a dealer on-site inspection program. Appointments are not necessary. South Seattle is only open on Fridays

  • Bellevue:
    2803 156th Ave SE, Bellevue 98007; (425) 649-4675
From I-90, take Exit 11A and follow the blue signs for the State Patrol.

  • South Seattle: Open Fridays only - exclusively Limosines.
    15666 Pacific Hwy S, Seattle 98188; (206) 439-3831
From I-5, take SR 518 (airport exit); travel west to SR 99 and the southbound exit; follow the signs for the State Patrol.

Dealer Hot Line: (425) 455-7750

For a statewide list of inspection sites, see Vehicle Inspections.

Which exit do I take to get to Sea-Tac Airport?

From northbound I-5, take the South 188th Street exit; go west one mile to SR 99; then turn right and drive north for 1/4 mile; follow the signs to the airport. If you miss the South 188th exit, continue north to the SR 518 exit, and travel two miles west to the airport highway.

From southbound I-5, take the SR 518 exit and travel two miles to the airport highway. If you miss the SR 518 exit, continue south and take the South 188th Street exit; go west one mile to SR 99; then turn right and drive north for 1/4 mile; follow the signs to the airport.

If I'm pregnant and have no other person in my vehicle, can I use the car-pool lane?

No. The State Supreme Court has ruled that this is not acceptable.

What is the phone number for road and weather pass conditions?

For Washington state road and travel conditions, you can dial 5-1-1 or our the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) toll-free number at 1-800-695-7623. You can also go to the WSDOT Traveler page.

Do I have to be a Mercer Island resident to use the express lanes across I-90 if there is no other person riding in my vehicle?

No. Single occupant vehicles can use the I-90 express lanes between Seattle and Mercer Island, regardless of residency. All traffic east of Mercer Island must have at least two occupants. Conversely, single occupant vehicles may travel from Mercer Island to Seattle in the car pool express lanes if entering from Mercer Island. All traffic east of Island Crest Way must have two or more occupants.

Can I use the car pool lanes on SR 522 in the Kenmore area?

No. This stretch of SR 522 is reserved for buses only.

Are car pool lanes for use only during rush hour?

The car pool lane is designed for vehicles with two or more persons traveling in one vehicle and is in effect 24 hours a day.

One exception is State Route 520 near Bellevue, west of the I-405 interchange, which requires a minimum of three people. This lane was originally designed as a shoulder and cannot safely handle large traffic volumes. For more information on carpool lanes visit the Department of Transportation's HOV lane web page.

How many times a day do state ferries leave the Seattle dock?

Information and schedules are available from WSDOT Sailing Schedule Web page or call 1-800-808-7997.

Why are State Patrol troopers in and around the ferry terminals?

The Washington State Legislature directed the Washington State Patrol to provide security in the ferry terminals and on the boats. In some areas, the Patrol contracts these services to adjoining law enforcement agencies.

Can I stop by any State Patrol office in King County to pick up found property or evidence without an appointment?

No. Please call our property and evidence custodian at (425) 957-2316 and be prepared to give him/her the date of the incident, the name of the arresting officer, and the evidence number.
