Detectives from the Spokane Investigative Regional Response (SIRR) team continue to investigate the officer involved shooting that occurred November 28th. SIRR team was activated after two Spokane Police officers, discharged their service weapons after reportedly being fired upon by a subject as they investigated a domestic violence assault at a residence in the 2900 block of E Rowan Ave.
The Spokane Police Department responded to the residence just before 6:00pm after a 911 domestic violence call was reported. Upon their arrival SPD was unable to locate the suspect and began to process the domestic violence crime scene. Initial information indicated the officers were on scene for approximately an hour and a half when a male, later identified as 59-year-old James Danforth, engaged the two SPD officers who had exited their patrol vehicle and began shooting at them.
After exchanging gunfire, the two SPD officers immediately rendered first aid to the Danforth who was transported to an area hospital and pronounced dead.

The Officer Involved Critical Incident Protocol was enacted and SIRR Team investigators responded to the scene to conduct the investigation and process the scene for evidence. The SIRR Team is comprised of multiple agencies in eastern Washington, including the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, Spokane Police Department, the Washington State Patrol and the Spokane Valley Police.
• The Washington State Patrol is the managing agency in this incident. All future communications regarding this investigation will be sent via the SIRR Team.
• The Spokane Police Department will release the name of the officers involved in the incident.
• Once the SIRR Team investigation is complete the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
