Washington State Patrol to Present Numerous Awards in King County

King County -- The Washington State Patrol (WSP) will presenting lifesaving awards as well as certificates of commendation to law enforcement personnel and citizens, tomorrow, May 9, 2017 at 10:00am at the WSP Headquarters in Bellevue.

Two of the lifesaving awards will be presented to the following individuals:

Mr. Shon McLeod
Mr. Peter Tabor (WSDOT)

On July 15, 2016, Mr. McLeod was on a motorcycle ride with his father and a number of friends when a vehicle crossed the centerline on SR 410 at MP 34. Mr. McLeod's father suffered a leg amputation as a result of the impact and Mr. McLeod along with Mr. Tabor were able to provide lifesaving care by applying a tourniquet that Mr. Tabor had in his truck.  When medical aid arrived they determined that this effort provided Mr. McLeod's father the best chance of survival. The quick thinking and determined actions of these two individuals made a lifesaving difference.

The second two lifesaving awards will be presented to the following individuals:

Sergeant JD Smith (Seattle PD)
Mr. Mike Brennan

On July 18, 2016 a collision occurred eastbound on I-90 near SR 18. As a result of this collision, one of the vehicles immediately caught fire with the driver unconscious and bleeding inside the vehicle. Sergeant Smith while off duty and no special equipment available ran right to the vehicle and was able to pry open the door and pull the female driver out of the vehicle while sustaining burns to his arms, hands and difficulty breathing due to the heavy smoke. Mr. Brennan arrived and helped Sergeant Smith carry the driver away from the burning vehicle. Without out the immediate actions of these two individuals the outcome would have been very tragic.

The certificates of commendation will be presented to the following individuals:

Detective Rich Newell (Bellevue PD)
Mr. Albert Williams
Mr. Daniel Kettner
Mr. Nathan Fleming
Mr. James Hoole (Retired San Diego PD)

On April 16, 2017, Trooper Brad Olsen was in a fight for his life WB I-90 at MP 34. During this altercation, the suspect repeatedly was trying to access Trooper Olsen's weapon and multiple Taser deployments were unsuccessful. These caring and courageous citizens stopped and assisted Trooper Olsen in getting the individual into custody. Detective Newell arrived toward the end of the altercation and took control of the scene to include a passenger in the suspect's vehicle that had been yelling during this incident. Detective Newell remained in control of gathering witness information until backup units arrived. The WSP is truly grateful for the caring and willingness of these individuals to come to the rescue of a trooper in need.

Captain Ron Mead (WSP District 2, King County Commander), along with Chief Batiste and Assistant Chief Sass would like to extend an invitation to media to attend this ceremony. A number of internal awards will also be presented at this event. The address for the Washington State Patrol District Headquarters is 2803 156th Ave SE, Bellevue, Washington 98006.

Please call Trooper Rick Johnson at (425) 766-0812 if interested in joining the WSP as we honor these amazing individuals.
