Jail Death Investigation
The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team (SIRR) is investigating an in-custody death that occurred, May 13th, 2015. The death occurred at the Spokane County jail after a suspect was transported there from an arrest on a domestic violence no-contact order. SIRR team detectives were called to investigate this incident after the Critical Incident Protocol was invoked.
The Spokane Police Department responded to the call of a subject violating a no contact order stemming from a previous domestic violence incident. Several officers arrived at the location within minutes of the call. The suspect, Lorenzo Hayes, was taken into custody without incident. Officers noted Hayes appeared to be under the influence. Hayes was transported to Spokane County jail where he experienced a medical emergency. CPR was started and Spokane City Fire medics responded. Hayes was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. An autopsy was completed by the Spokane County Medical examiner on May 13th, 2015, and toxicology reports are pending. No officers were injured during this incident.
This continues to be an active and ongoing investigation. SIRR detectives will continue to process evidence, interview witnesses and interview all the officers involved with this incident.
The SIRR Team is comprised of multiple agencies in Eastern Washington, including the Spokane County Sheriff's Office, Washington State Patrol, Spokane Police Department, and Airway Heights Police Department.
- The Washington State Patrol is the managing agency in this incident. All future communications on this incident will be sent via the SIRR Team.
- The Spokane Police Department and Spokane County Detention Services will release the name of the officer(s) involved in this incident.
- Once the SIRR Team investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor's Office for review.
