WSP Joins National Commercial Vehicle Safety Emphasis
That Targets Both Car and Truck Drivers
Olympia -- Troopers and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers from the Washington State Patrol’s Commercial Vehicle Division (CVD) are participating in Operation Safe Driver during the week of Oct 14 – 20, 2012. Operation Safe Driver is a nationwide safety emphasis to reduce the number of deaths resulting from crashes involving large trucks, buses and passenger vehicles.
State troopers and commercial vehicle enforcement officers statewide will conduct comprehensive commercial vehicle inspections and will target aggressive and fatigued truck and bus drivers, as well as other drivers operating unsafely around them.
“It can be a real nightmare on our roads for drivers when a collision involving a semi- truck occurs,” said Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste. “We want to ensure people are sharing the road responsibly; driving safely around a big truck is just as important as making sure the truck is operating safely.”
WSP’s participation in last year’s Operation Safe Driver event had CVD officers inspecting 2,117 commercial motor vehicles and placing 173 vehicles and 76 drivers out-of-service for equipment or driver safety violations.
Operation Safe Driver is a partnership between federal and state government agencies, law enforcement and the trucking industry from across North America to stop, ticket, and educate aggressive, distracted and fatigued drivers. Agencies and organizations participating in Operation Safe Driver aim to increase commercial vehicle and non-commercial vehicle traffic enforcement; safety belt enforcement; driver roadside inspections; driver regulatory compliance; and, increase awareness to the motoring public about safe operations around commercial motor vehicles.
