Motorcycle Collisions are on the Rise!

Motorcycles Use Extreme CautionWenatchee -- Fatal collisions involving motorcycles are on the rise in Washington, and the Washington State Patrol Troopers are urging the public to be more cautious when travelling on the roadways this summer.

“We have seen an increase in motorcycle collisions over the last month across the state and unfortunately some of those have resulted in fatal injuries to the driver or rider,” said Lieutenant Kandi Patrick.  “We know that with the good weather we will have more motorcycles on the roadway during the summer months but this increase in serious injury and fatal collisions are alarming said Lieutenant Patrick.

We would urge all motorcyclists to slow down, ride safe, if riding in a pack provide enough space to maneuver in case of an emergency, and don’t push your limits.

Speed and impaired driving are the top two reasons for all motorcycle collisions in Washington State.  Analysis of collisions tells us that more than half of fatal motorcycle collisions involve a single motorcycle.  40% of the fatalities involved unendorsed riders and the most common cause for fatal collisions are lane errors, speed, driving while impaired, and driver inattention.  In the last three years 72% of motorcycle fatal collisions were the fault of the rider.

What can you do to stay safe?

Ride safe – Be responsible – Know the laws – Your safety depends on your driving!
