Two Week Investigation into Pursuit Leads to Arrest
An arrest has been made in the June 8th incident just north of Diamond Lake where a speeding vehicle crashed into a yard as it was being pursued by a Washington State Patrol trooper.
On June 8th, Trooper Kyle Witt attempted to stop a vehicle that was traveling at a high rate of speed on SR-2 just north of Diamond Lake. The driver did not stop, but attempted a high speed turn where he lost control and crashed through a ditch and into a yard. The suspect driver then fled the collision scene on foot through the woods. The suspect was tracked by use of a Border Patrol K-9, but was not located.
Information collected at the scene from the male and female passengers in the suspect vehicle helped Trooper Witt identify the driver as 19-year-old Chaize T. Exkano of Newport.
Trooper Witt spent the last two weeks following leads, but none of them led him to Exkano until Thursday morning. Trooper Witt received information that Exkano was holed up in the Downtowner Motel at 2nd and Washington in Spokane. Trooper Witt was able to obtain enough information from motel staff to confirm that someone fitting Exkano’s description was at the motel.
Trooper Witt and multiple troopers from the Spokane area staked out the motel with a picture of Exkano until they observed him leave where he was subsequently taken into custody without incident.
Exkano was booked into the Pend Oreille County Jail on three misdemeanor warrants and one felony warrant that was issued as a result of the June 8th incident.
