‘Decisions’ DUI Video Receives Two Platinum AVA Awards
The ‘Decisions’ video covers a tragic collision that took the lives of two high school students June 9, 2010, after their vehicle was struck by a DUI driver. ‘Decisions’ adds a unique perspective on impaired driving education with an interview of the DUI driver. The video won Platinum awards in both ‘Safety’ and ‘Government’ in the 2011 AVA awards.
In an effort to create an educational campaign that bridges the gap in education on impaired driving, the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, Video Me Productions, and the Washington State Patrol worked together to create the ‘Decisions’ video. Alexander Peder, the driver convicted on two counts of vehicular homicide for the collision, had been arrested for DUI two times prior to the decision to drive while intoxicated on June 9, 2010. Mr. Peder stated that he had a flawed decision making process when impaired and believes others who drive drunk also do the same thing. Mr. Peder reached out to WSP Detective Moate and asked what he could do to make a difference in impaired driving education which prompted the partnership that created the ‘Decisions’ video.
On June 9, 2010, at 2230 hours a car occupied by three teenagers became disabled in lane one SB I-5 near SR 518. While the driver was on the phone with 9-1-1 their vehicle was struck from behind by a car driven by Alexander Peder. Both passengers in the disabled vehicle were killed and the driver sustained minor physical injuries. Mr. Peder, who was on a deferred prosecution for his second DUI, had a blood alcohol level of .16%. On April 29, 2011, Mr. Peder plead guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide and was sentenced to 102 months in custody.
