Parking on Highway to Ski is Illegal

Snowy Tracffic on Stevens PassWenatchee -- Washington State Patrol (WSP) Lieutenant Kandi Patrick reminds you to not park on the shoulder of the highway to go skiing. Recently on Steven’s Pass traffic congestion and parking was so bad that if needed, a DOT plow truck or emergency workers would have had a difficult time getting through the congestion.

With the prediction of snow in the forecast we expect an increase in skiers and snowboarders coming to the pass. Troopers will be out enforcing the laws regarding parking on the shoulders of the highway.

Skiers and outdoor enthusiasts are reminded that per the Revised Code of Washington (RCW), it is unlawful for the operator of a vehicle to leave an unattended vehicle on a highway unless the operator of the vehicle arranges for the prompt removal of the vehicle. The shoulders of the highway are for emergency use and emergency parking only. Parking on the shoulder to ski is not an emergency and is subject to a $124.00 fine and the possibility of the vehicle being impounded.

Motorists are reminded that prior to traveling this winter to check road conditions by going to the Washington Department of Transportation web site at www.wsdot.wa.gov, or by calling 511.
