Motorcycle Troopers Focus on Reducing Speed Related Collisions

Earlier this week, Washington State Patrol motorcycle troopers in King County stopped over 100 speeders on a four day emphasis in the Tukwila area on Interstate 5.

The Tukwila area of Interstate 5 is a heavily traveled route that many motorists take commuting to Seattle area jobs, the Sea-Tac airport, and Boeing Field.  Data shows this area has a large number of speed related collisions.  The Seattle area Washington State Patrol motor detachment is focusing efforts to reduce collisions throughout King County.

In just 4 days, 3 motorcycle troopers working a speed emphasis for 3 hours each morning, made 111 stops for speed and contacted 16 drivers violating the HOV lane restriction.  Trooper Bryan Martin planned the emphasis to respond to the “large number of speed violations in the area.”

Planning ahead for delays is a much safer way to get to work and the airport on time.  Excessive speed is often a factor in serious injury collisions.  The Washington State Patrol motors unit is a specialized tool that can focus on speed problems in high congestion areas.
