Good To Know Video: Why Academy Instructors Yell

Olympia -- You’ve seen movies and videos of military drill instructors yelling at recruits. They’re six inches from the new soldier’s face, screaming at the top of their lungs.

At the State Patrol Academy in Shelton, WSP instructors use that same technique.

This month’s edition of the WSP video series “Good To Know” will pull the curtain back on why State Patrol instructors use what might seem like a very harsh teaching method.

“There is a purpose to the yelling,” said Sgt. J.J. Gundermann. “It’s not hazing, and it’s not because our instructors are impatient people.”

Currently getting used to the noise are members of the Patrol’s 23rd Arming Class- a prelude to the full Trooper Basic Training Class that will begin in the fall.
