Bogus Helmet vs. Legal Helmet
Wenatchee - Washington State Patrol (WSP) Captain Karen DeWitt reminds motorcycle riders be aware of Washington State traffic laws regarding helmets. Novelty helmets will not protect your head and brain in a crash like a helmet certified to meet the DOT standards. What is a legal helmet?
- A helmet certified to meet the DOT standards has an inner liner, usually one-inch thick and made of polystyrene (Styrofoam). (This is what makes a non-compliant helmet easy to spot.)
- The chin strap must be strong and well-attached. (Thick strap vs. flimsy)
- DOT sticker required on back of helmet
- Snell or ANSI Label required on inside of helmet
- Manufacturer’s Label is also required on the inside of the helmet
- There can be no attachments or protrusions over two-tenths of an inch long.
