Car Pedestrian Fatalities

In the last ten months the Washington State Patrol (WSP) has investigated seven car vs. pedestrian fatalities in Southwest Washington. The WSP would like to offer the public some safety tips in order to prevent further tragedies, especially with the holiday weekend approaching:

  1. Do not walk on the freeways. The freeways are limited access and pedestrians are prohibited.

  2. If you are driving and your vehicle becomes disabled, pull to the right shoulder as far as possible. Stay in your vehicle as much as you can. If you do need to exit the vehicle, do so on the passenger side. Do not stand on the traffic side of your vehicle. Do not stand between two vehicles, and always keep an eye on traffic.

  3. If you need to change a flat tire on the traffic side of your vehicle call roadside assistance, or 911 if you feel unsafe. The WSP will respond.

  4. If you are involved in a collision and your car is drivable, move your vehicle to the right shoulder and call 911. Stay in your car as much as possible and use all the safety features your car will afford you. Again if you must exit your vehicle, do so on the passenger side.

  5. If you are involved in a collision and your car is not drivable, move away from your vehicle to a safe place and call 911.

  6. If you are a Good Samaritan and stop at a collision, park your car in a safe location and dial 911, and again, always keep an eye on traffic.

Zero traffic deaths and zero disabling injuries in the State of Washington is a goal of the WSP. While our roadways have never been safer since 1955, there is still much to do. These safety tips are designed to keep you and your family safe.
