Tumwater Woman Killed in Texting While Driving Collision

Thurston County - On February 18, 2011 at 5:14 p.m., 22 year-old Ashley R. Davis-Jones was killed in a collision on State Route 12 south of Olympia.  Ashley R. Davis Jones was driving a 2005 Mazda 3 east bound, crossed over the centerline, and struck a 1995 Freightliner box truck head-on that was driving west bound.

State Troopers investigating the collision located an open cell phone on the driver’s floorboard and determined that Davis-Jones had been texting moments before the collision occurred.  This is consistent with Davis-Jones leaving her lane of travel in a straight-a-way.  The 65 year-old Rochester man driving the Freightliner was not injured in the collision.

Washington Department of Ecology responded to the collision scene to prevent a possible spill of iodine and bleach into Scatter Creek.  The truck was hauling drums of the mixture used for sterilization in dairy operations.

The Washington State Patrol works diligently to educate drivers of the dangers of texting while driving.  Collisions like this are completely preventable and in a second can change the life of someone you know and love.  Please don’t drive while you’re distracted.
