1500lb Steel I-Beams Spill Onto I-90
The off ramp to Highlands Drive from eastbound I-90 near Issaquah was shut down for several hours Tuesday evening after a flatbed semi-truck overturned while attempting to exit the freeway. The incident occurred just after 5:00 p.m. when a Sound Delivery Services Inc. semi rolled onto its passenger side after failing to negotiate a the curve on the elevated off ramp, spilling its load of steel I-beams.
Upon Troopers initial arrival, one of the I-beams was hanging precariously over the eastbound lanes of I-90. Troopers were forced to shut down all lanes of eastbound I-90 for approximately 40 minutes while crews secured the I-beam. The 51 year old driver was uninjured and no other vehicles were involved.
In addition to the wet roadway, Troopers believe speed was a large factor. The load of steel I-beams may have also been improperly secured. The State Patrol stresses how important it is to obey the posted speed limit and to slow down even more during inclement weather.
