Troopers Will Be on the Highway Looking for Irresponsible Drivers this Labor Day Weekend

Marysville, WA - Around Labor Day weekend, traffic increases as families plan their final summer trip before the kids go back to school and the weather turns cool.  Emphasis patrols will begin Friday, September 3, and continue through Monday, September 6. Troopers will be targeting violations that contribute to traffic collisions including DUI, speeding, aggressive driving, and seat belt use.

In Snohomish, Skagit, Whatcom, and Island Counties overtime grant funding will allow additional troopers to patrol throughout the holiday period.  “Troopers will be focusing on dangerous driving behaviors known to cause injury and fatality collisions,” said Washington State Patrol Captain Ken Ginnard.  “Drivers must make a plan before the festivities begin—if you are going to drink, ensure you have a designated driver.  Do not take the risk of ruining your life and the lives of others.”

The public is encouraged to call 911 if they spot aggressive, impaired, or unsafe drivers.  The license plate number and a description of the vehicle will be helpful in assisting troopers in locating the offenders.  The WSP will also be using aircraft to crack down on aggressive and impaired drivers during day and nighttime hours.

The Patrol suggests taking the following precautions:

Always wear a helmet and protective gear when on a motorcycle, as these are your best defenses against an impaired driver.
