Hoopfest Safety Given Serious Hang Time
Court monitors won’t be the only ones keeping an eye on Hoopfest participants this weekend. The Washington State Patrol and Spokane County Sheriff’s Office have teamed up to have aircraft in the sky for most of the three-on-three basketball weekend.
A WSP Cessna will be above the city Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons and evenings with a focus on identifying and apprehending alcohol or drug-impaired drivers and reckless drivers.
When the plane isn’t up, the sheriff’s helicopter will be. Air One will be used for vehicle pursuits and searches, should the need arise, and will be available for call-out throughout the Hoopfest event.
Both teams hope their presence will increase safety for area residents and visitors alike. Crew members will use the weekend operation as opportunity to train together and increase coordination for future incidents that might require the presence of both aircraft.
