Fire & Life Safety InspectionsThe Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) conducts fire inspections in all childcare centers, boarding homes, group homes, nursing homes and hospitals.

Inspection schedules and codes and standards that apply vary based on the occupancy type.


Occupancy Types & Facilities:

  • Boarding Homes — The Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) is the state licensing authority for boarding homes and requires approval from the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) before licensing a facility.

  • Child Care Centers — The Department of Early Learning (DEL) is the state licensing authority for childcare centers and requires approval from the OSFM before licensing a facility.

  • Group Homes — The Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) is the state licensing authority for group homes and requires approval from the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) before licensing a facility.

  • Hospitals — The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) conducts joint inspections with the Department of Health (DOH) on hospitals and must meet approval before licensing.

  • Nursing Homes — The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) does unannounced surveys with the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) on nursing home facilities and must meet approval before licensing.

  • Residential Treatment Facilities — The Department of Health (DOH) is the state licensing authority for Residential Treatment Facilities and requires approval from the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) before licensing a facility.
