2008 Fire Service Course Descriptions
| NOTE: Students attending Academy classes with burn prop applications are required to have met all training requirements for live fire training listed in NFPA 1403. All students and instructors shall have full protective clothing, safety equipment that meets current NFPA standards, and breathing apparatus and spare bottle that meet NFPA standards and with a current hydrostatic test date. |
There
are two registration forms.
- The general registration form (below) is for all classes except certification testing.
- A
specific certification registration form is required for Firefighter
1 & 2 and Hazardous Material Awareness/Operations written/practical testing.
You may either mail or fax the registration form (the fax number
is located on the form) to the Fire Training Academy.
Download and
fill out the registration form for the Certified Test Center. Payment
must be included with submission of registration form. The Fire Training
Academy will invoice Fire Departments. If no check is attached to
application, applicant will be considered department sponsored. If
no department is listed on application and no check is included,
applicant will not be registered for test/practical.

Cancellation: The
Fire Training Academy must be notified in writing five (5)
working days prior to the scheduled start date of the test/classes
or the full student fee will be assessed.

FIRE DEPARTMENT FIREFIGHTING
| Advanced Pump Operator Academy – APO-001 -- $285 per student |

This 40-hour course provides the knowledge and skills essential to pump operators performing their duties at emergency incidents. The curriculum is based on objectives from Chapter 3 of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Fire/Apparatus Driver/Operator. This course includes responsibilities of pump operators, hydraulics and friction loss, pump controls and accessories, fire streams, pumper practices, pumping from draft and pump evolutions and using the fire pump at the fire hydrant.

| Burn to Learn - BTL-001 -- $180 per student |

This 8-hour course is designed for new firefighters and presents an unusual opportunity to review hose handling basics in demanding foreground activities. It is an intensive eight hour program which provides participants with the skills to function as members of a hose attack team. Firefighters will work with a variety of fire situations utilizing direct, indirect, and combination attacks.

| Flammable Liquid I - FLC-001 -- $190 per student |

This 8-hour course will supplement a firefighter's knowledge of basic hose handling, firefighting equipment, and extinguishing agents. It introduces the attacks and procedures required to safely control and extinguish flammable fuel fires, covering properties, and behavior of flammable liquids in bulk, fire extinguishing agents, safety, tactics, communications, and environmental concerns. The six hour application session includes fireground experience on selected props. Students will participate in field exercises utilizing specially designed mockups of automobiles burning at a street curb and a large overturned tanker.

| Flammable Liquid 2 - FLC-002 -- $190 per student |
|
During this 8-hour program the students will be taught the basic properties of liquefied petroleum gasses, L.P.G. powered vehicle fuel systems, storage tanks and the safety features built into them, detecting leaks, product identification and basic tactics for L.P.G. emergencies. The students will also participate in controlling live fires on a simulated storage tank; and a L.P.G. fill station.

This class provides a full day of multi-company operations and live fire training utilizing your own apparatus including lunch at the North Bend Fire Training Academy. Class features include: IMS/WAC/NFPA updates, WAC/NFPA documentation, pump operator challenges, IMS coordination/evaluation, scenario based dispatching for commercial and multi family scenarios, aerial operations and vehicle/flammable liquid fires.

This 8-hour course provides the basic skills needed for a firefighter to function efficiently during interior search and rescue missions using self contained breathing apparatus. Students will gain the skills necessary to deal with the practical use of challenging interior search and rescue props.

This 8-hour class, developed for multiple company operations, was designed to offer firefighters and Company Officers with trapped firefighter rescue and personal survival techniques. Concepts from basic self-help and fireground survival strategy to the complexities of Incident Command at missing or trapped firefighter operations are covered. Students will rotate through stations on advanced SCBA maneuvers, mayday communications, personal escape techniques and Rapid Intervention Team operations. The day ends with real time RIT evolutions using actual scenarios that have caused firefighter fatalities across the country.

& Rescue 3 (RIT Operations) – SRC-003 -- $215 per student |

This class challenges firefighters to apply skills for the removal of themselves and others from situations that threaten their lives. The curriculum will review emergency use of SCBA, exiting a building using a hose line and radio procedures for declaring a MAYDAY, if in distress. Firefighters will learn and practice how to deploy a Rapid Intervention Team, as well as the utilization of Thermal Imaging Equipment in locating victims.

| Technical Heavy Extrication – TEC-001 -- $400 per student |

This sixteen hour program was developed to provide realistic technical heavy extrication training. The course will offer life like and challenging scenarios for you to respond to take control and mitigate. Topics will include auto extrication with and without hydraulic rescue tools, shoring, airbag usage, and hazard stabilization. Participants shall meet the requirements of NFPA 1006 and 1670 at the Technician level for Vehicle and Machinery Rescue.

| Truck Skills Academy – TSA-001 -- $665 per student |

The majority of fire departments within Washington State and across the country do not have ladder or truck companies assigned to their organizations; yet in order to efficiently and safely extinguish a structure fire many none water application task must be performed. This 40-hour Academy will focus on duties that are normally designated as truck company functions or fire attack support. Among the functions that will be covered are: laddering of a structure, ventilation skills, basic and advance search techniques, forcible entry, control of utilities, as well as salvage and overhaul.

Cooperative Courses Available on Request
Most cooperative classes are scheduled on the weekends. Class rosters must be received by the Fire Training Academy no later than five working days prior to the start of the class if certificates of completion are needed on class day. The maximum size of the class is limited to 25 unless authorized by the Fire Training Academy. All excess students will be billed for.
NOTE: All co-op instructors must have successfully passed the class as a student, attended a Train the Trainer program for the course they are going to teach and taught within the last 12 months at the Fire Training Academy.

Your organization is responsible for providing at least one support person to fill air bottles. This person will be trained by the Fire Training Academy maintenance staff during the Train the Trainer portion of the class and cannot be a course participant. If it is impossible for you to provide a support person, please let us know early and we will arrange for a support person at an additional fee, which will be added to your course cost.
Each department sending participants is responsible to make sure that air bottles are within current hydrostatic testing standards and that all protective equipment meets current NFPA standards set forth in WAC 296-305. All co-op classes are responsible for cleaning up the classroom and the drill grounds after their class. This includes policing the area for garbage, putting equipment away, tagging broken items, etc.

The Train the Trainer course orients department training personnel in all areas of the courses under the cooperative system: Burn to Learn and Search and Rescue 1. This course is offered to fire department personnel only. |

This 8-hour course follows the same outline as Burn to Learn. The lead instructor and safety officer are provided by the Fire Training Academy. This course is offered to fire department personnel only. |
Flammable Liquids 4 Co-op - FLC-004 -- $140 per student |

This
8-hour course allows fire departments to utilize the flammable
liquid field props with no classroom participation. The
Fire Training Academy will provide the Safety Officer and fuel
operator. This course is offered to fire department personnel
only. |
| Multiple Company Operations - MCO-001 -- $665 per class |
| |
This 8-hour course is designed to provide opportunities for fire departments to use their own apparatus and equipment on live fires. The Fire Training Academy provides a Course Facilitator to oversee the operation of the course. There is no formal Fire Training Academy instruction provided beyond facility safety and preservation. Fire Departments can make this course as difficult or easy as they desire. It can also be designed to concentrate on specific objectives.
Prerequisites: Departments are required to submit an operational plan to the Fire Training Academy five working days prior to the start of the class. This operational plan should include the lesson plan and course objectives. |
| Portable Fire Extinguishers Co-op - FXC-102 -- $145 per student

This 8-h+our course follows the same outline as the Portable Fire Extinguisher class with no classroom participation. The Fire Training Academy will provide the Safety Officer and fuel operator. This course is offered to fire department personnel only. |
