Prevention · Fire & Life Safety Inspections

Fire Inspection Process for Boarding Homes:

The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) conducts fire inspections in all boarding homes that are applying for a new license or renewal of an existing license through the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS). DSHS is the state licensing authority for boarding homes. DSHS requires approval from the OSFM before licensing a facility and may suspend a current license if the OSFM identifies uncorrected hazards. Boarding homes are inspected to International Fire Code, all applicable state amendments, and to the Washington Administrative Code 212-12.

When an applicant applies for a boarding home license DSHS submits a fire inspection request to the OSFM. Once initially licensed, boarding homes are inspected once every year for renewal of their license. Deputy State Fire Marshal’s (DSFMs) start all renewal inspections prior to 90 days of the license expiring.

If the DSFM finds no deficiencies during the inspection, an inspection report approving the facility for fire and life safety will be provided to the applicant or operator of the boarding home. If any deficiencies are identified during the inspection the DSFM will provide a detailed inspection report that explains the deficiencies to the applicant or operator, along with timelines required to correct all deficiencies.

The DSFM will conduct a re-inspection at a time agreeable to either the applicant or operator of the boarding home and the DSFM prior to the license expiration date. During the re-inspection the DSFM will confirm that all previously noted deficiencies have been corrected. The OSFM will notify DSHS when the facility is approved for fire and life safety.
