Homeland Security · Vessel & Terminal Security
The Vessel and Terminal Security (VATS) Section is divided into three regions — Bremerton, Seattle and Marysville.
VATS troopers and explosives detection canine teams provide public safety, explosives detection, traffic control, and public assistance for Washington State ferry vessels and terminals in and around Puget Sound.
VATS Troopers have conducted law enforcement duties using bicycles since 1995. Bicycles offer a low cost approach to their unique patrol duties – which include narrow passageways, stairs and other obstacles. Bicycles allow our troopers greater access to areas that patrol cars cannot cover.
Bicycle patrol troopers conduct vehicle screenings, manage congested traffic, assist with crowd control, check high risk security areas and conduct traffic law enforcement. Troopers riding bicycles have found that this mode of patrol creates an atmosphere for commuters to approach our troopers with questions and concerns they might have.
VATS cadets assist troopers by providing traffic control and public assistance at Washington State Ferry terminals.
Video Monitoring Unit
Trooper Cadets staff the Washington State Ferry video monitoring center providing an extra layer of security for vessels and terminals.
