Citizen Requests and Data Spark SR 522 Emphasis
Snohomish – The Washington State Patrol (WSP) Commercial Vehicle Division conducted an emphasis that resulted in 40 driver violations in just three hours.
During an emphasis on January 10, 2018, WSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers, Commercial Vehicle Division troopers, and Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks troopers, focused their efforts on State Route 522 between Monroe and Woodinville; specifically looking for overweight commercial motor vehicles
(CMVs) as well as equipment and load securement violations.
Between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., units stopped 37 commercial vehicles, resulting in:
• 40 driver violations
• 30 equipment/weighing violations
• 3 out of service violations
Violations included, but no limited to, unsecure loads, speeding, and overweight vehicles. All of which contribute to serious injury and fatality collisions.
Citizen requests and data from our partners at the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) made this emphasis possible. The WSP receives numerous complaints about CMV’s losing rocks and debris along SR 522. Additionally, data from WSDOT shows, in November of 2017 alone, 26.41% of CMV’s travelling westbound on SR 522 were found overweight; the highest percentage in the state of Washington.
This emphasis was done in an effort to make Washington roadways the safest in the nation.
